  • Parenting in Today’s World: Friendship or Guidance? A Biblical Perspective

In today’s culture, parenting has taken on a noticeably different tone than in previous generations. Many parents strive to build close, open relationships with their children, often choosing to interact with them more like friends than authority figures. While this approach can foster communication and trust, it also raises an important question: Are we losing something essential in the way we guide and raise our children?

Friendship in parenting is not inherently wrong. Children benefit from feeling heard, valued, and understood. However, when the role of “friend” replaces the role of “parent,” it can create confusion about boundaries, discipline, and respect. Children need more than companionship—they need leadership, instruction, and loving correction.

The Bible offers a clear and balanced model for parenting that reflects both love and authority, modeled after Christ Himself. Here are several biblical principles that can help guide parents toward a more Christ-centered approach:

    1. Lead with Love, Not Just Approval
Christ’s love was unconditional, but it was never permissive. He did not seek approval from others; instead, He acted in truth and love. As parents, we are called to love our children deeply, but not at the expense of what is right. True love sometimes means saying “no,” setting limits, and guiding children away from harmful choices.

    2. Embrace the Role of Teacher and Guide
Scripture calls parents to actively teach their children. Parenting is not passive—it is intentional. Children are not born knowing right from wrong; they learn through consistent instruction and example. Teaching should happen in everyday moments, not just formal settings, shaping both character and faith.

    3. Practice Consistent and Loving Discipline
Discipline is often misunderstood in modern parenting. It is not about punishment for its own sake, but about correction that leads to growth. Biblical discipline is rooted in love and aims to guide children toward wisdom and self-control. When done consistently and calmly, it builds security rather than fear.

    4. Model Christlike Behavior
Children learn as much from what they see as from what they are told. Patience, humility, forgiveness, and self-control are all traits demonstrated by Christ. When parents model these qualities, children gain a living example of how to navigate life and relationships.

    5. Maintain Healthy Authority
Jesus demonstrated authority with compassion and clarity. In the same way, parents are called to lead their homes with confidence and fairness. Being an authority figure does not mean being harsh or distant—it means providing structure, making decisions, and guiding children with wisdom.

    6. Build Relationship Without Losing Responsibility
A strong parent-child relationship is essential, but it should not come at the cost of guidance. Parents can be warm, approachable, and supportive while still maintaining clear boundaries. The goal is not to be a child’s equal, but their foundation.

Parenting today often leans toward friendship in an effort to connect with children in a rapidly changing world. While connection is vital, children ultimately need something deeper: parents who reflect the love, wisdom, and authority of Christ. By embracing a biblical approach, parents can raise children who not only feel loved, but are also prepared, grounded, and guided in truth.

Your kids may not like you in the moment, but they will respect you in the end.

  • Built for a Purpose: A Message for the New School Year
At River City Believers Academy, each school year begins with prayerful expectation and a fresh reminder of who we are a [ ... ]

At River City Believers Academy, each school year begins with prayerful expectation and a fresh reminder of who we are and why we exist. This year, we’re thrilled to announce our 2025–2026 school theme: Built for a Purpose, inspired by Hebrews 3:4:

"For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything." – Hebrews 3:4

This verse anchors our hearts in the truth that God is not only our Creator, but also the master builder of our lives. He doesn't build without intention. He doesn't design without meaning. Just as every beam, every nail, and every blueprint in a house matters, so does every student, every teacher, and every moment at RCBA.

What This Theme Means for Our Community
Built for a Purpose is more than a slogan—it’s a declaration over every child walking our halls: You were made on purpose, for a purpose. This year, we want our students to not only grow academically, but to grow in their identity in Christ. As we study, serve, compete, create, and worship together, we’ll be reminded that we’re part of something bigger—God’s eternal plan.

Whether a kindergartner just starting out or a senior preparing to launch into the next season, each of our students is a living testimony of God’s craftsmanship. Our desire is for every heart to be strengthened in the knowledge that God is building something beautiful—something eternal—through their lives.

    How We’ll Live It Out
Throughout the year, this theme will be woven into chapel messages, classroom discussions, service opportunities, and school-wide events. We’ll celebrate the unique gifts and purposes God has placed in each individual, and we’ll call students to steward their talents for His glory.

You’ll see the theme reflected in our spirit wear, in our classrooms, and—most importantly—in our daily interactions. We invite our families, staff, and local community to walk with us in this journey, encouraging one another and building each other up in Christ.

We can’t wait to see what God will do in and through RCBA this year. After all, every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

    Prayerfully,
    Mrs. Davenport, Head of School
